Cake are one of those bands that should be massive, yet if they were, it would ruin the feeling of the band. They fly just under the radar to be able to be fully creative, and that is in my opinion, the best position a band can be in artistically. The guitar playing is fantastic, the beats are catchy, but what stands out most of all is John McCrea's unique lyrical and vocal style. The band seems to be very much influenced by Latin music, through the use of salsa rhythms and Mariachi guitars (you can read about Latin American music here). However the band also blends this with country, hip hop, trumpets, spoken vocals and dark sarcastic lyrics.
With any experiment, be it musical or not, it's very much hit and miss, but when it hits, it really does hit, and with Cake, they never really seem to miss either. So here's one of Cake's most famous songs, and once you've listened to it and it's stuck in you head for hours, you'll see why it's our song of the day.
